El Milagro De Los 33
420mm X 594mm
In my Typography: Hierarchy and Expression class at MCAD we had to produce a piece in response to rescue of the trapped miners in the 2010 Copiapó mining accident, 5th August 2010. Knowing that the work was to be posted to 4th Bienal de Diseño, Chile, and that over seventy percent of Chileans are Roman Catholic, I chose to focus on the religious aspect of the event: the reported sighting of a butterfly in the mine.
In miner Jorge Galeguillos’ letter to his family, he described seeing a small white butterfly in one of the tunnels shortly after the rock collapse. His family’s explanation was that the butterfly was guardian angel sent to protect Jorge and the other miners.
I chose to represent the butterfly with a reversed ‘33’ and used the bright red and blue colours from the Chilean flag, hoping to communicate my excitement and create a positive, celebratory response to the rescue.
